The Center for Government and International Studies (CGIS) project is a new two-building, 170,000-square-foot complex straddling Cambridge Street several blocks northeast of Harvard’s original Yard in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The completed CGIS will include faculty offices, graduate student workspaces, classrooms, a library, computer facilities, and a café.

Unique Design and Historic Preservation

Design for the project included two new buildings on either side of Cambridge Street and several renovated, historic, wood-frame houses. Our work involved relocating one of the historic houses to its final resting place and building a lower-level concourse structure under adjacent houses. Furthermore, interconnecting the two buildings required that we direct bury several utilities in Cambridge Street.

Developing a Solid Infrastructure

The prestigious new center in a busy urban setting demanded a solid infrastructure. Working in collaboration with architect Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, Kleinfelder provided complete site planning, civil engineering, environmental assessment, and demolition services for the complex. We also provided utility relocation for steam, chilled water, electrical, and telecommunication, as well as storm drain, sanitary sewer, domestic water, and gas. Furthermore, Kleinfelder was responsible for designing stormwater management systems for both building sites.

Project Results

In addition to comprehensive site planning, civil engineering, environmental assessment, and demolition services, Kleinfelder collaborated with our client and other stakeholders to relocate various utilities, as well as designing a stormwater collection system that optimized water flow and quality.
