In light of upcoming, more restrictive drinking water regulations, the Town of Danvers sought a comprehensive evaluation of its water treatment plant (WTP). The Town contracted Kleinfelder for a full evaluation of the treatment process, as well as the building structure and physical plant, to improve treatment performance.


Time Takes a Toll

The treatment approach at the facility had remained nearly unchanged for decades. As a result, any proposed treatment process changes had to carefully consider implications to established treatment methods and clearly show benefits over the traditional treatment approach. In addition to the anticipated cost, the eventual upgrades were expected to require at least two years of lead time before financing could be established.

Evaluation Through Collaboration

Kleinfelder’s team of experienced, specialized engineers evaluated all aspects of the treatment facility, including the treatment process, pumping and conveyance systems, architectural conditions, roof, and structural integrity, as well as electrical, SCADA, and HVAC systems. Collaborating closely with WTP staff, Kleinfelder worked to understand and address the most difficult items the operators’ daily processes, then identified and evaluated potential methods to address each operating need.

Project Results

Kleinfelder’s risk-based criteria for setting a prioritized program of capital improvements enabled the Town to address immediate safety concerns at construction costs of 10-20% of the proposed alternative, allowing the Town to pursue the upgrades with sufficient time to secure State Revolving Fund financing and gain Town-wide support.
