The Mid-County Parkway is a key transportation corridor accommodating critical regional west-east movement in Southern California. Working under the County of Riverside and the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC), Kleinfelder has provided geotechnical engineering support services on this 32-mile transportation project since 2004.
Since 2004. Kleinfelder has provided geotechnical engineering and support for the MCP. In 2008, concerns regarding costs, timing of available funds, and impacts to rural communities led RCTC to modify the project—focusing on the 16-mile eastern half and adding two system-to-system interchanges, nine new service interchanges, and forty new bridge structures. Ongoing construction and investigations demanded that the team quickly adjust to changing schedules, delivering innovative solutions in accordance with updated environmental and regulatory requirements.
With more than 20 years of work in the Inland Empire, Kleinfelder’s familiarity with local geology and key geotechnical issues enabled the team to quickly develop innovative and accurate methods for evaluating potential project impacts. The team performed field investigations, laboratory testing, an initial geologic constraints evaluation, and preliminary geotechnical design reports, preliminary foundation reports, as well as impact reports for the Metropolitan Water District regarding potential project effects on the Colorado River Aqueduct (CRA).
By combining an experienced team of local staff with experts pulled from nine other offices, Kleinfelder offered significant and specialized expertise to streamline the MCP’s schedule and success. KIeinfelder’s long-standing relationship with RCTC enabled positive collaboration throughout an onslaught of unanticipated challenges—enabling easy and accurate adaptation to the project’s changing demands.
