The University of Massachusetts-Amherst commissioned Kleinfelder to devise a comprehensive campus improvement plan that establishes a consistent level of quality through various campus precincts, while creating a more inviting, pedestrian-friendly community.
Kleinfelder analyzed the existing land uses and proposed a more integrated campus land use plan. We also provided an assessment of the campus utility infrastructure. Our work involved a review of campus maps and condition information, as well as, mapping of all facilities and natural features that are part of the storm water system for the campus, including detention and retention structures, storm drainage pipe systems, natural stream channels, rivers, lakes and wetlands.
Kleinfelder mapped the existing natural resources, including floodplains, bottom lands, unique geological features, vegetative communities, nesting or feeding habitats, aquifers, and aquifer recharge areas. Our 3D modeling enabled the University to better understand the close connection between underground infrastructure, landscape, and buildings.
The overall plan presented a landscape design that considers the natural ecosystems, as well as the campus land use and character. The plan defined and illustrated the campus open space structure, including natural environmental systems, and a hierarchy of spaces through the use of quadrangles and greens that will encourage interaction and reduce the amount of impervious material in the core campus.Project Overview
