BOSTON, Massachusetts – Dennis Doherty, P.E., F.ASCE has joined Kleinfelder–a leading engineering, construction management, design, and environmental professional services firm–as a Senior Principal Professional. A nationally recognized leader in trenchless technology, Doherty will provide technical expertise and drive advancement and integration of leading-edge trenchless technologies on oil and gas, utility, water/wastewater, and municipal infrastructure projects.
“I was attracted to Kleinfelder because of their talented and growing trenchless team and their approach to trenchless projects,” explains Doherty. “It aligns with my philosophy that many inherent risks of trenchless projects faced by our clients can be managed during the design process through use of industry accepted standards of care and best practices. I look forward to helping grow and enhance Kleinfelder’s trenchless practices.”
Doherty has 40 years of industry experience, with the last 30 years focusing primarily on design, construction, and management of underground infrastructure through application of trenchless technologies including pipe bursting, microtunneling, auger boring, pipe jacking, pilot tube method, and horizontal directional drilling. By applying a “think outside the box” approach, Doherty has successfully delivered many challenging and significant projects involving environmentally sensitive sites, congested urban areas, river/body-of-water crossings, and sites with challenging terrains. Doherty leverages his deep understanding of trenchless best practices and methodologies to manage risk throughout the design and construction process, producing safe, reliable and sustainable horizontal underground infrastructure.
“We’re thrilled to add such a highly respected professional to Kleinfelder’s reputable trenchless team,” commented Romeo Shiplee, Kleinfelder Principal Trenchless Technology Engineer. “With specialized expertise in trenchless technologies, he will elevate our staff to an even higher level of excellence as he imparts his knowledge to Kleinfelder’s next generation of technical leaders.”
Doherty has been instrumental in the advancement of trenchless technology to benefit the industry. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and, as one of several principle authors, he contributed to the ASCE Standard Construction Guidelines for Microtunneling and Pilot Tube Methods. He also led a joint task force in revising the standards and introducing section on trenchless methods for Gravity Sanitary Sewer Design and Construction. Doherty has also held leadership roles within organizations such as NASTT and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
“I’m excited to have Dennis on our team. Dennis’ knowledge and experience with trenchless technologies strengthens our market position in the East and across the U.S. Kleinfelder is actively investing and growing in this market, and Dennis will be a great asset to our team,” said Thomas Rodriguez, Kleinfelder East Division Director.
Doherty is licensed as a Professional Engineer in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Texas, and North Carolina. He holds a master’s degree in management of projects and programs from Brandeis University and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from University of Massachusetts, Lowell where he is now actively involved with the NASTT student chapter and growing interest in trenchless with students in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.
