BOSTON, Massachusetts – The American Planning Association (APA) Sustainable Communities Division recognized Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) and the Utile-led consulting team, including Kleinfelder, with a 2020 APA Excellence in Sustainability Award for the City of Boston’s Coastal Flood Resilience Design Guidelines. The award was received in the Policy, Law or Tool category.

Building on Climate Ready Boston, the Coastal Flood Resilience Design Guidelines, which were approved by BPDA in 2019, are part of the City’s ongoing efforts to plan for and address the impacts of climate change. The Guidelines apply to existing and future developments – ensuring buildings are built or adapted to withstand the flooding risks posed by sea level rise and storm surge – and serve as a reference for residents, business owners, and developers to translate flood resilience strategies into best practices.

As part of the consultant team, Kleinfelder was integral in the development of the Guidelines, providing architectural, engineering, and planning support for technical analyses, including mapping products, resiliency strategy recommendations, zoning review and guidance, and support for building type case studies.

In addition to guidance for new development, the Guidelines address the pressing challenge of how to retrofit existing buildings to be more resilient to coastal flooding and provide recommendations on how to link building resiliency measures with public realm, accessibility, and sustainability improvements.

“Kleinfelder is proud to see the Coastal Flood Resilience Guidelines recognized by American Planning Association as an extraordinary achievement in sustainable planning,” commented Kleinfelder Senior Climate Change Planner Nasser Brahim.  “In addition to playing an important role in protecting Boston communities from threats posed by climate change and rising sea levels, the Guidelines will serve as an informative reference and model for other cities that are at risk.”
