Trusted partner to join Kleinfelder in support of midstream oil and gas clients

LACEYVILLE, Penn. —  Kleinfelder, a global architecture, engineering and science consulting firm, is pleased to announce the acquisition of A-1 Surveying (A-1), a Pennsylvania-based firm offering professional land surveying services tailored to the midstream oil and gas industry. The transaction closed on December 31, 2012.

“A-1 has been our preferred partner for land surveying services in the region since 2009, and they have proven to be a very valuable resource to Kleinfelder and our midstream clients working in the Marcellus and Utica Shale plays,” said Bill Siegel, Kleinfelder CEO. “We continually strive to build our full-service, global support services to a variety upstream, midstream and downstream clients, and our acquisition of A-1 is an important factor in helping us to do so in the region.”

Founded by Mark McCullough, PLS, in 2008, A-1 provides professional services including boundary and topographic surveys, subdivision staking and layout, ALTA/ACSM surveys, as-built surveys, site plans, utility route surveys, tower site surveys, flood studies, and more. Their advanced equipment allows them to survey extremely difficult and remote terrain without the need for a GPS signal, while providing accuracy within a millimeter. This ability to measure with such a high degree of accuracy provides significant asset management benefits to oil and gas clients.

“Since our initial engagement with Kleinfelder in 2009, they have been our primary business partner, and we have expanded our operation to support their growing client needs in the region,” said McCullough. “We owe much of our success to Kleinfelder, and we are thrilled to become part of the company.”

McCullough grew his small firm steadily through the partnership with Kleinfelder, and he is now supported by four crew chiefs, three additional crewmen, and an administrator. The entirety of A-1’s staff will now become employee-owners at Kleinfelder and will work from the firm’s Laceyville, Penn., office, under the Kleinfelder name.

Kleinfelder has been executing a strategic growth plan since 1992, of which expanding services to the oil and gas industry — both organically and through acquisition — has been a key factor in the plan’s success. In addition to acquiring A-1, Kleinfelder has made a number of key acquisitions in both the United States and Australia within the past couple of years, as well as opening an office in Calgary, Alberta in support of multinational energy clients. With these new offices, Kleinfelder has expanded their global reach, as well as their support services through every phase of oil and gas projects — from site selection, permitting, resource evaluation and technical assessment, to design, construction, reclamation and project closeout.
