Kleinfelder was instrumental in the design and construction of two new facilities at the Duke University Medical Center Campus. A seven-story, 267,000 square-foot Cancer Center opened in February 2012, and an eight-story, 608,000 square-foot Medicine Pavilion with surgical, imaging, and critical care facilities recently opened in July 2013.
Simultaneous construction of two large facilities required smart staffing and scheduling to meet the technical, management, and compliance demands of this high-profile, complex project. While working within the large Duke campus, it was critical that clear communication and coordination efforts were maintained between all stakeholders to ensure construction of the new facilities does not interrupt services at the operating hospital.
Kleinfelder provided comprehensive inspection and testing services for these new medical facilities. From an onsite office, Kleinfelder maintained around-the-clock staffing that provided timely services that ensured quality workmanship and maintained the construction schedule. Services included special inspections and materials testing for cast-in-place concrete, deep foundations, structural masonry, structural and architectural steel, and roofing components, as well as the associated project management and reporting. Working onsite enabled Kleinfelder to quickly respond to needs of the project's design and construction teams.
By providing timely and thorough inspection and testing services, Kleinfelder helped Duke maintain the project schedule by reducing uncertainties during construction. Kleinfelder worked closely with the various project stakeholders that ensured the project met regulatory and technical standards.
