Kleinfelder was retained by an oil and gas company to complete design, procurement, and fabrication drawings for a Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) Facility. Kleinfelder’s scope included design and generation of pipe fabrication drawings for all small bore off-module piping (2” and under), purchasing of the small bore pipe and fittings, and materials management from suppliers to various fabrication facilities.

Tight Coordination

The oil and gas company engaged multiple contractors to complete fabrication of the small bore piping for this project. A high level of coordination was required by Kleinfelder to control the drawings and materials delivery to the various contractors. Kleinfelder addressed this challenge with the development of a proprietary progress tracking and change control database that enabled Nexen to manage the fabricator capacities in real-time.

Real-time Management and Control

Since development of this database in 2005, Kleinfelder has been using it successfully to execute additional Client projects, and we have expanded it to include cost and materials control. We have also proceeded to support the Client with document and quality control in the fabrication facilities, along with supporting as-building activities—all of which has helped optimize production.

Project Results

Kleinfelder’s solution gave the Client the information necessary to adjust the fabrication resources required to both optimize production and meet project schedules.
