Northern California Cultural Resources Group Retreat & Training

On August 18, Kleinfelder’s Northern California cultural resources group held an overnight camping retreat at China Camp State Park.  In addition to fostering team building, the retreat also doubled as a training, providing staff with hands-on learning related to lithics (taught by Mike Lenzi, Archaeologist), historic artifacts (taught by Jessica Neal and Kruger Frank, Archaeologists), and osteology (taught by Eric Strother, Archaeologist and Human Osteologist).

The day concluded with a barbecue during the evening, allowing attendees to relax and socialize. The following day, the team took advantage of the park’s natural surroundings and many hiking trails.

Jessica Neal commented, “In addition to enriching our understanding of various archaeological and cultural resources topics, the retreat strengthened our team’s bond, fostering a collaborative spirit that will undoubtedly enhance our work together on future projects.”

Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail Recognized

The Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail was recently recognized as the most popular trail in the state of Delaware, according to a survey conducted by Delaware Greenways.  Ultimately, the Trail will extend 17 miles between Georgetown and Lewes, Delaware creating a safe, non-motorized facility improving regional connectivity, healthy lifestyles, and economic growth.  Currently, 11 miles have been constructed, the majority of which was designed by Century-Kleinfelder.

Central to the trail’s design philosophy was the integration of both environmental sensitivity and practicality. Capitalizing on sections of abandoned railway, the rail to trail minimized disruption to the delicate wetlands while reducing the necessity for new drainage infrastructure. Beyond its functional elegance, this off-road alignment seamlessly links neighboring communities, parks, and other trails, fostering a culture of wellness and curtailing vehicular traffic. In other Rail with Trail sections, the design integrated the active railroad ensuring safe operations of both facilities.

To better understand the local popularity of the trail and its usage patterns, Delaware Greenways conducted a survey, gathering insights from over 800 participants.  An impressive 92% of respondents attested to their fondness for the trail primarily for exercise, while also appreciating its recreational and relaxation benefits. Pedal power emerged as the dominant mode of exploration, with 75% of users favoring bicycling to traverse the trail.  In addition, the survey revealed that the trail’s allure spans the seasons, with 84% dedicating one to two hours of their time year-round, and more than half utilizing it throughout every season.

The survey also asked respondents to share suggestions for enhancing the trail experience. From improved trail lighting to expanded parking facilities, and the inclusion of public restrooms and hydration stations, the vision for enhancement was varied and responses are being incorporated in future designs.

Looking forward, the trail is set to expand, with federal funding recently secured for the completion of the trail.  The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) received a $21 million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant to finish the final six miles of the trail, extending it to a total of 17 miles. Century-Kleinfelder will support DelDOT by designing the last six-mile connection.

Century-Kleinfelder Senior Program Manager Bill Conway commented, “The Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail is recognized as a valuable alternative mode of transportation connecting communities and providing recreational opportunities for the community. We’re looking forward to collaborating with DelDOT to design the trail’s final stretch, and we’re confident that these final six miles will further increase the trail’s popularity.”

Century-Kleinfelder Awarded $750K Contract for Delware Memorial Bridge Collision System Construction Observation

Century-Kleinfelder is proud to have been awarded a contract to provide construction observation and administration services for safety upgrades at the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) operates the bridge, which serves as a vital connection between Delaware and New Jersey. Originally opened to traffic in 1951, the bridge sees more than 100,000 vehicles cross the eight lanes each day. Due to the age of the bridge, the current tower pier protection systems do not account for today’s larger, faster ships. The new bridge ship collision protection system project consists of the installation of eight solid-fill dolphin cells, each measuring 80 feet in diameter. Four cells will be installed at the piers supporting both eastern and western towers and will be located a minimum of 443 feet from the edge of the Delaware River’s 800-foot-wide channel.

Century-Kleinfelder was selected to provide construction observation and administration services for the project over the 28-month period of construction. This will include on-site observation personnel and daily reports. Century’s staff will take daily boat transportation to the construction area to monitor construction activities, plan implementation, and quantities. Century will assist in facilitating between the contractor, DRBA, and the engineer of record. This task was awarded as part of an on-call engineering contract. The total cost of the project is $93 million, and it is expected to be completed by September 2025. The overall cost is partially funded through a US Department of Transportation BUILD Grant, which is providing $22.25 million.

“Projects that keep our neighbors safe and infrastructure sound are incredibly important. We are proud to be part of the ship collision system upgrade project with DRBA that will provide new safety measures affecting more than 100,000 people each day!”

Kleinfelder is a Member of the National Safety Council

Kleinfelder is a National Safety Council Firm

Did you know? Kleinfelder is a member of the National Safety Council (NSC), a nonprofit safety advocate organization that focuses on eliminating the leading causes of preventable injuries and deaths.

The NSC is also a sponsor of Safe + Sound Week, so we are highlighting Kleinfelder’s membership with this impactful organization.

As a member, Kleinfelder’s Health & Safety team – and all employees – have access to NCS resources, including opportunities to participate in educational webinars and forums, network with others in the industry, and engage with the NSC’s mission and offerings.

Kleinfelder Health & Safety Director Sally Miller said that one safety challenge Kleinfelder faced that NSC has helped with is improving driver safety training efficacy.

“The National Safety Council was instrumental in providing solutions by offering specific driver safety training modules that address the driving risks most relevant to our staff,” she commented. “These modules are now mandatory training for Kleinfelder employees via our internal learning management system.”

Sally said that Kleinfelder will also utilize NSC’s benchmarking tools to improve our safety programs and culture going forward.

“Kleinfelder’s managers and employees have created a trend of remarkable growth in Kleinfelder’s Health & Safety culture,” she said, “and I look forward to continued improvement with NSC as a partner for the benefit and safety of our employees, business partners, and the public.”

Disability Independence Day: Spotlight on ADA Projects

Kleinfelder is proud to support the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 33rd Anniversary. On July 26th, we celebrate this important civil rights law that works to ensure all people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

Nationwide, Kleinfelder has contributed design and construction services to many projects that have led to significant improvements for people with disabilities.

Vice President and Senior Program Manager for Kleinfelder-Century Bret Martine shared a sampling of projects in Delaware where clients rely on our knowledge and expertise in ADA compliance:

Over the past 15 years, Kleinfelder-Century has designed and managed the construction of the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s statewide boat ramps improvement program. This includes parking lot paving, efficient parking layout, and ADA compliancy. In this photo, proper van and vehicular ADA parking was increased per ADA regulations.

Kleinfelder-Century has designed and managed over 100 traffic signal improvement builds for the Delaware Department of Transportation, including full rebuilds, signal timings, ADA ramps, countdown pedestrian signal heads, audible push buttons, and compliant crosswalk pavement markings.

Here, our design team conducts field measurements to verify that the cross-slopes of sidewalks and crosswalks were within specific tolerances for the Town of Ocean View and Delaware Department of Transportation. This type of care is standard for all ADA-based projects.

During a drainage and sidewalk improvement project, Delaware State University requested improvements to a pathway connecting their event parking to a desirable destination for shopping and food. All improvements were ADA-compliant.

In 2010, the Delaware Department of Transportation requested a wooden platform that could be used to divert the pedestrian traffic from an active work zone. This was the first off-alignment pedestrian platform for the State of Delaware and was critical in the early development of temporary ramps and pathways to avoid construction areas. From this project, we developed the Department’s details and standard specifications for this type of structure and have since modified several times to include kick plates, detectable end treatments, and handrails.

Bill Hasbrook Named 2022 WTS-Heart of Texas Chapter’s Man of the Year

Bill Hasbrook, FDBIA, MEMS, TCFM was recently honored with the Women Transportation Seminar (WTS) – Heart of Texas Chapter 2022 Honorable Ray La Hood Man of the Year award for his outstanding achievements, leadership, and contributions to the field of transportation. This award is given specifically to a man who has led by example, seeks out opportunities to advance and advocate for women and minorities in his own organization and industry, and actively ensures that they are able to compete for key positions of authority. Bill not only challenged and placed individuals in historically non-traditional roles and encouraged the pursuit of professional licensing, but also focused on and mentored both women and minorities within Kleinfelder as well as for local, regional, and national professional organizations.

Commenting on the recognition, Bill stated, “I am not only humbled and honored by this recognition, but I have to admit a bit embarrassed as well. Embarrassed at being recognized for simply doing the right thing. The interesting part of that is that while I did look for specific opportunities to advance women and minorities, they got appointed to those positions, and their success came because they were simply the most qualified for the job. So, I accept it on behalf of the drive, motivation, focus, and successes of all those that took a chance on me mentoring and helping champion their paths forward. Here’s to all those superstars – they are the true award winners.”

Two Kleinfelder Projects Recognized by Austin Business Journal

The Texas Capitol Complex Expansion and Highland Mall Expansion projects were winners of ABJ’s 2024 Commercial Real Estate Awards.

The Texas Capitol Complex Expansion and Highland Mall Expansion projects won recognition at the Austin Business Journal’s 2024 Commercial Real Estate Awards dinner. The event recognizes projects – and the people and companies behind them – that exemplify best practices in building and development and have significant impact within the community.

The Texas Capitol Complex Expansion, which received the Public Sector Award, transformed the Capitol Complex into a destination that celebrates the Capitol with grand civic spaces, shaded pedestrian-friendly streets, and connections to the surrounding community. Kleinfelder’s work on Phase I of this project began from the ground up – from providing special inspections and testing for Austin’s own “big dig” beneath the complex to the topping out of the Barbara Jordan (State) Building. Kleinfelder also provided inspection services on the Central Utility Plant, the 18th Steet TRUSS structure over the Complex’s excavation site, and environmental services for materials discovered over the course of the excavation and development.

The Highland Campus Expansion, which received the Community Impact Award, redeveloped the former 1970s-era Highland Mall into an innovative learning center and transformed the surrounding surface parking lots into a vibrant, urban mixed-use district. Kleinfelder provided materials testing and special inspections for Austin Community College’s new 114,000 square-foot (750,000 GSF), seven-floor parking garage at the Highland Campus. The new parking garage provides 2,385 parking spaces for vehicles and 200 bicycle parking spaces. A central plant was built adjacent to the parking garage as well as chilled water lines to feed other portions of the campus.  Due to the expedited schedule, the project required around-the-clock resources. Quick turnaround times with field reports and laboratory testing were essential to maintaining the fast-track schedule. Kleinfelder staff performed required testing and inspection services on multiple structures and phases simultaneously while meeting the schedule requirements.

“We are honored to have contributed to these award-winning projects,” commented Austin/Killeen Operations Manager Kelly Daniel.  “Both projects demonstrate our Austin team’s ability to successfully support multiple large-scale historic developments that redefine the city’s urban landscape.”
