The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Iowa presented Veenstra & Kimm, Inc., (V&K), lead design and construction firm, with the Water & Wastewater Honor Award for the City of Des Moines and the Wastewater Reclamation Authority’s (WRA) Ingersoll Run Outlet Sewer Segment 1 Project.  This new sewer system enhances infrastructure, preserves local history, and improves Des Moines flood protection.

Designed to manage sanitary waste, this new system brings lasting community benefits. With a modern sewer system, the city is better equipped to handle heavy rainfall and reduce the risk of sewer overflows, thereby protecting the environment and public health.  The sewer upgrade was coordinated with road repairs, saving significant taxpayer dollars and minimizing commuter disruption.

The Old Fort Des Moines site presented unique challenges that required special care, including the preservation of more than 100,000 artifacts discovered during an extensive archaeological dig. These efforts ensured the city’s rich history was preserved while advancing critical infrastructure improvements.

Despite several challenges, careful planning and coordination with local businesses and residents paid off — the award-winning project was completed eight months ahead of schedule and within budget. This accomplishment reflects the dedication of V&K staff, supports long-term infrastructure, and enhances community resilience while preparing for future growth and environmental challenges.
