Kleinfelder-Century Celebrates Milestone in U.S. 1 College Park Improvement Project

On November 9, Kleinfelder-Century team members Vien Thai and Eddie Bostic joined officials, consultants, and community leaders at the ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of the first phase of the U.S. 1 College Park Improvement Project. Over the course of approximately 12 years, Kleinfelder-Century has supported this nearly $57 million project, which aims to improve safety and accessibility along the 1.5-mile stretch of Route 1 between College Avenue and University Boulevard, a major gateway to the University of Maryland.

Project Manager Vien Thai oversaw the highway design for the corridor, collaborating with Senior Designer Jim Jackson. Meanwhile, Senior Traffic Designer Eddie Bostic led the reconstruction and modification designs for ten traffic signals and oversaw the Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) designs prepared by teammate Jason Holloway. Additionally, Senior Professional Maurice Johnson provided drainage design to support stormwater and roadway enhancements.

Led by the Maryland State Highway Administration, the upgrades include widened lanes, five-foot bicycle lanes, raised medians, ADA-compliant sidewalks, improved lighting, resurfaced roads, updated signage, and enhanced drainage facilities. These improvements not only prioritize pedestrian and cyclist safety but also improve connectivity to surrounding neighborhoods, the university, and downtown College Park.

Future phases of the project aim to extend these enhancements to Hollywood Boulevard and further north to Interstate 495, pending funding.
