Jordan Nappi Returns from EWB Trip to Rwanda
Project Professional Jordan Nappi (Princeton, NJ) recently returned from Rwanda, where she traveled with Engineers Without Borders USA’s New York Professional Chapter (EWB-NY) to help implement the first project under the Kibingo Water Project.
EWB-NY’s Kibingo Team is partnered with Gihombo Forward (GIFO), a local NGO within the Kibingo Cell, part of the Gihombo Sector in the Nyamasheke District within the Western Province of Rwanda (learn more here).
The project included re-development of an existing spring and installation of a gravity-fed storage tank to capture water from the spring and provide storage capacity as well as improved access for locals.
“For many members of the community, this spring is one of their only sources of water,” Jordan said.
Jordan added that this opportunity allowed her to learn, reflect, and appreciate.
“Prior to the trip, I was hoping our work would leave a positive impact on our partner community. What I didn’t expect was the profound impact that it would leave on me.”
Looking forward, the Kibingo Team will be working on additional water projects within the Kibingo community, including installation of rainwater catchment systems at the primary and secondary schools and exploring alternatives for more robust distribution systems.
“Being able to use my experience in water supply infrastructure design and construction to help implement this project alongside our local construction team was so rewarding and brought me so much joy,” Jordan said. “I’m so grateful to work with such passionate and talented team members at EWB-NY, and I’m excited to continue our work!”
