Kleinfelder Awarded Design Contract to Improve Quality of the Tioga River

February 11, 2022

(Mechanicsburg, PA) – The Susquehanna River Basin Commission (Commission) awarded Kleinfelder a nearly $1.5 million design contract for an abandoned mine discharge treatment plant to improve the quality of the Tioga River from Blossburg to Mansfield, Pennsylvania.

Abandoned mine discharges (AMD) are a leading source of stream impairment in Pennsylvania and have polluted the Tioga River for quite some time.  The Commission has partnered with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), and the Tioga County Concerned Citizens Committee (TCCCC) to improve water quality in the region.

The treatment plant, once completed, will actively treat five AMD discharges. This will assist in restoring the mainstem of the Tioga River and parts of the Tioga-Hammond Lakes Recreation Area. Downstream water quality improvements, which will flow across state lines into New York, are also anticipated. The project also includes several pump stations, approximately 5 miles of water conveyance piping, a treatment sludge discharge system, and design of the associated controls for both manual and remote operation.

“Kleinfelder is very excited to assist the Commission with this important design project that will positively impact the environment and the communities along the river,” commented Kleinfelder Project Manager Sami Pretzel, PE. “We plan to support the Commission by delivering a design that incorporates flow management and redundancy in order to achieve operational flexibility during seasonal variations in the flows associated with the AMD discharges.”
