Project Description:

As part of the Freedom Tower Complex construction, Kiewit/Treviicos was contracted to install a slurry wall structure along the eastern portion of the major bathtub structure that will surround the foundation of the Freedom Tower Complex. The slurry wall will be approximately 1,200 feet long and ranging in depth from 70 to 120 feet will be installed in stages along Liberty, Church and Vesey Streets to secure the existing structure that was damaged as a result of the 9/11 attacks.

Currently, Kleinfelder provides environmental as well as industrial hygiene health and safety services for five on-going Kiewit projects. Kleinfelder’s track record of knowledgeable service and response has moved the company to a position of preferred consultant with the Eastern district. Consequently, Kiewit has asked Kleinfelder to lend support during the various phases of the project by providing environmental and geo-technical as well as health and safety services. Kleinfelder has initiated subsurface soil testing at the site along the run of the slurry wall to pre-characterize material that will be excavated as part of the slurry wall installation. The results of the analysis will be used by Kleinfelder to help advise Kiewit of potential disposal options. Kiewit also will be constructing a Hilfiker Wall®, using compacted lifts of material to provide access to the work site and has requested that Kleinfelder provide compaction-testing services during the construction process. Kiewit also has requested Kleinfelder to be prepared to develop a health and safety program to address potential issues.

Client Issues:

This project involves a very tight schedule, which is dictated by other projects being conducted by other companies at the same location leaving little to no room. Excavated materials from the site will require a “load and go” approach.
