Newport-Mesa Unified School District Costa Mesa, CAProject DescriptionKleinfelder is providing hazardous material surveys for the modernization of 28 schools within the NMUSD over a 5-year period. Schools include elementary, middle and high schools that will require hazardous material surveys prior to construction activities to protect student, staff and worker safety. Kleinfelder’s services include reviewing existing NMUSD environmental documents such as asbestos & lead surveys, coordinating with the District Architects and Construction Manager on modernization activities and conducting hazardous material surveys & reporting. Kleinfelder has prepared hazardous material assessment documents for use by the Construction Manager in preparing specifications and bid documents. The modernization projects include the addition of new classrooms, renovation of existing buildings (libraries, offices, cafeterias, & classrooms), installing new parking lots and modernization of gymnasiums, swimming pools, and lunch areas. Example project description includes review of a previous asbestos survey conducted by others that concluded no asbestos in a multi-purpose room. Kleinfelder noted “asbestos-like” materials and suggested an asbestos survey by Kleinfelder staff. Work was completed on an urgent basis and our comprehensive survey detected asbestos on the previously “cleared” room. Kleinfelder prepared asbestos specifications prior to building modernization activities.
