2008 Give Your Hearts to Kids – 3rd Annual HOPE Ride PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 16 July 2008 00:00
Several Kleinfelder staff members from southern California participated in the 3rd annual “HOPE Ride” – a charity motorcycle event to raise funds for Camp HOPE, a San Diego non-profit organization focused on helping disadvantaged children. Camp HOPE is a camping facility located at Lake Sutherland in eastern San Diego County. The camp provides turning-point opportunities where at-risk, abused, and neglected children can find hope, healing, and a chance to begin a new life. This remotely located mountain-setting allows these children to experience trust and courage, develop positive relationships, gain a higher sense of self-worth, acquire new skills, and learn core values in a safe environment. Most are inner-city children who have never experienced the outdoors.

Kleinfelder was a corporate sponsor for this event along with many of our local our business partners. Over $100,000 was raised for this year’s event.

Duke Good (Temecula), David Timms (San Diego), Bob Turchick (San Diego), and Gerry Salontai (San Diego) were event participants from Kleinfelder.

Gerry Salontai has been a part of the event’s organizing committee for several years and was recently appointed to the Board of Directors for Camp HOPE. When asked why this particular charity was so important to him, Gerry responded:

“Children are our future and any program that is focused on helping children is an immediate priority. Camp HOPE takes inner-city, less privileged kids, who come from very hostile family environments and gives them the opportunity to experience the natural outdoors in a safe environment. I believe the environment you are raised in has a large part in shaping your future. The children that experience Camp HOPE have not had the advantages and experiences my own children have had. My goal is to help ensure that as many children as possible can experience the quality impacts many of us had growing up. If this experience helps shape a more positive experience for just one child a year, it is an awesome success.”

During his service on the board, Gerry hopes to advance the construction of a permanent facility.  Currently, Camp HOPE has temporary facilities, some of which were damaged in last year's fires. Additionally, Gerry would like to work to increase the annual funding for the organization so more kids can experience Camp HOPE each year.
