As part of mitigation for adverse effects resulting from a transportation project, MaineDOT engaged Kleinfelder to complete the Lewiston Mills and Water Power System nomination to the National Register. The district encompassed Lewiston’s rich heritage related to the textile mill industry.
The nomination synthesized the historic district’s local and statewide significance and documented Lewiston’s prominent mill buildings and canal system, including the Albert Kahn-designed Bates Mill No. 5. Kleinfelder was also required to document a significant number of varied auxiliary resources that supported industry, such as social buildings, housing, and commercial ventures, as well as rail lines.
