This project involved investigation, evaluation, design, and construction of the Creekside Irrigation Water Reservoir located upstream of Creekside Reservoir No. 1 near Canyonville, Oregon. Completed in 2007, this 80-acre-foot gray water facility is comprised of two earthfill embankments and is used to meet local irrigation needs.

Fast-Track Schedule

Awarded in January 2006, the project required a fast-track schedule so the facility could accept gray water from the new water treatment plant prior to the 2007 irrigation season. This required an innovative and accelerated investigation and design process, as well as approval from the State of Oregon dam safety office to begin construction before completing final designs. The State also required a first filling plan and Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for the reservoir.

Divide-and-Conquer Approach

Splitting the project into two design packages enabled construction on the first (foundation), while the second (embankment and appurtenances) was still in progress. In addition to geological assessments and geophysical testing, Kleinfelder provided engineering services during construction and installed instrumentation and telemetry systems for remote and automated data collection. Kleinfelder also prepared a first filing plan and EAP, then conducted a table-top exercise to help the owner prepare response to a potential dam safety emergency.

Project Results

By simultaneously conducting site investigations, construction operations, and design, Kleinfelder helped the owner maintain the project schedule—completing the facility prior to the 2007 irrigation season. The remote data collection system reduces operating costs, and the automated, real-time monitoring provides the fastest possible response time to emergencies.
