Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) needed to replace the outdated HVAC system in the Ticketing Hall of Logan Airport’s 45-year-old Terminal C, as well as the 30-year-old interior ceiling, which had inadequate lighting and significant cosmetic problems. The project also included installation of a sprinkler system that Massport had promised to its Fire and Rescue Department.

Challenging Design Work

The biggest challenge was designing and locating three large air handlers, each the size of an average house. This involved complicated ductwork that required coordination with other systems in the space. In designing the new ceiling and lighting system, Kleinfelder had to work in cooperation with two concurrent projects in adjacent areas, including a security checkpoint consolidation project that required terminal expansion. Furthermore, the project required careful staging and logistics plans to ensure safe and uninterrupted terminal operations.

An Effective, Efficient Solution

Each of the air handlers were placed on the roof of a new terminal extension, efficiently sharing utility connections, ductwork, and mechanical space with the security checkpoint area. Kleinfelder’s new ceiling design combines lighting, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), fire protection, and security devices into an integrated, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance system. Moreover, the ceiling reflects the spirit of the original 1964 design, while bringing the terminal into the 21st century.

Project Results

Today, those who pass through Terminal C enjoy the comfort of a well-lit, visually impressive Ticketing Hall with improved air quality. Furthermore, Terminal C surpasses code requirements with a comprehensive sprinkler system. All of the upgraded systems were delivered on time and on budget, with minimal disruption to on-going terminal operations.
