Kleinfelder provided design and construction administration services for this new sustainable Army Aviation Support Facility (AASF) for the New Hampshire Army National Guard (NHARNG). The completed project includes a two-story, 106,500-square-foot facility, 13.25 acres of rigid and flexible paved taxiways, and a runway used by Blackhawk helicopters and executive jets.
Challenge: The project required an integrated sustainable design compliant with EO 13123 to lower lifecycle energy and water usage intensity, while minimizing stormwater runoff impacts. It also had to meet NHARNG mission goals, NFPA fire prevention and protection, and UFC ATFP requirements.
Solution: Kleinfelder designed a water conserving, low-impact stormwater management plan for 27 acres of paved runways, parking, and roof areas. Innovative use of bioswales, detention ponds, and permeable pavement minimizes stormwater runoff and treatment. Kleinfelder’s design also minimizes lifecycle energy costs, using insulated fabric Megadoors in the hangar, boosting thermal efficiency and providing natural light.
Project Results: Kleinfelder’s design yielded a highly energy efficient, attractive facility, that was completed on time and approximately 10% below the government construction estimate. The new facility applies U.S. Department of Defense and UFC compliant AT/FP measures, with setbacks from all buildings and roads, blast resistant window glazing, robust site security barriers, and electronic detection and monitoring systems.
