Kleinfelder

This project encompassed two buildings on the College of San Mateo (CSM) campus: the four-story, 140,000-square-foot College Center and the three-story, 88,000-square-foot Health and Wellness Building.

Challenge:  To meet the demands of a growing student population, this design-build, multi-component project included demolition of outdated buildings and enhancements to exterior areas of the campus. Improvements included a new chiller plant, aquatics center, fine arts courtyard, and an electrical infrastructure upgrade. A fast-track schedule for several concurrent projects required constant communication among all stakeholders and timely response to onsite demands.

Solution: Kleinfelder’s multi-disciplinary team worked closely with all project stakeholders to provide the necessary technical knowledge and expertise of construction materials and building inspections applications. Concrete and steel from the demolished buildings was recycled and reused on site where possible, saving the college money and reducing environmental impacts. Kleinfelder used personnel from various offices and disciplines to meet the inspection and testing services for the duration of this project.

Project Results: As part of this design-build, high-profile project, Kleinfelder provided timely technical and project management expertise to assist in the on-time completion of this state-of-the-art college campus. Our knowledge of local requirements resulted in more timely, efficient reporting, while our “One Company” approach provided overall cost savings. Furthermore, these structures received LEED Silver certification for green design and demonstrated CSM’s commitment to sustainable building design and construction.
